Conference Brochure

About the conference

TOne of the key concerns of contemporary social science studies is the linkage between health, power, and wealth. Historians have largely problematized the issue from a postcolonial perception and tried to unravel how colonialism disciplined the body and mind through western notions of health. Political scientists have questioned the unholy alliance between state, corporate state, and newly emerging institutions and practices of health on a global scale. Economists are concerned with the fiscal aspects, including state allocation to health care, cost effectiveness of different systems of medicines, implications of corporate capitalism, etc. In addition to these, discussions on health from gender and Dalit perspectives are emerging areas. Though there have been attempts to transcend disciplinary boundaries to understand the human existence and health, we assume that it requires more intensive interdisciplinary studies to unravel how the field of health is becoming major cite through which wealth, power, and inequalities are generated and reproduced. With this perception in mind, we, the social science departments of Payyannur College, are organizing a two day international conference titled Approaches to Health in the Neo-liberal Context: Transcending Disciplinary Boundaries
